Question by stevensfan05: Does missing a monthly heartworm pill affect a dog’s digestion?
My dog is almost seven years old, and ever since we had him (at six weeks), we give him a heartworm pill once a month. Our vet recently switched brands of pills, and our dog turns his nose up at this pill. After a couple days of unsuccessfully trying to get him to take it, we decided to just skip this month and talk to our vet later about another alternative. Now, two weeks later, our dog is having extreme gas; the smell is horrible. Is there any connection to missing a pill and this? Please lend us your knowledge! Thanks.

why don’t you roll the pill up in a little ball of cheese and see if he’ll take it then.
And no, missing a heart worm pill wouldn’t give him gas.

No,there is no connection, but you should not skip the pill.Just put it down the back of his throat like you would any other pill,or hide it in a piece of cheese or hot dog.

  2. Julie D. says:

NO. The hearworm pill has NOTHING to do with your dog’s sudden gas. Also, what is the problem with giving the dog the pill? Just put it down his throat…..problem solved.

  3. Erin R says:

Heartworm preventatives have nothing to do with digestion, especially if the dog never even took the dose. If your dog will not take the brand your vet carries your vet can write you an Rx for the old brand which you can buy from another vet or the internet.
